Student Made Production Company

Here is the original image for my own production company that I had to make. I did not know how to make it a video, and did not have the software so I made it a picture, and it does not move. It would be a production company that stays on screen for a few seconds and leaves for something better. To make the image, I used a fake Oscar Statue, and placed it against the window, facing the light and took a picture with my phone, which has an iPhone 5s camera.
I then added text to it using Macromedia Fireworks. It was a "Century Gothic" font, and the size was 300, I placed it on the right, just near the right shoulder of the Oscar Statue and called it "Oscar Bait", also making the colour gold like the statue, a parody, if you will, of all the films that come out just to get Oscars.

Student Made Production Company Deconstruction

These two logos are the production companies of the people who made the short film for their media class; titled ‘Young Blood Media Studies AS 2013-14’.

This was made in a very simple manor, but does not look like it does. It is like an illusion. It seems like a flame and water merging, when in fact it is just a disc having water poured on it. This simplistic idea is impressive, and makes the finished product look marvellous even after knowing what it actually is. I believe that the logo is successful because it is such a simplistic design that it is impressive how it gives off the illusion of being something that it is not. It does not change much, as it is just a disc with water being poured, and the light reflected off of the disc makes the flame look.

This logo is fitting for a horror film, as there are elements of horror with the silhouettes of children with many eyes. This was made with photoshop, and is a good idea to do, as you can take any picture and using the tools you could turn it into anything. It is impressive, as they have taken different shades of grey and used it to create the shadow figures that are behind the logo ‘Bad Blood Productions’. They also move, as if they are shadows and light is being shined on them. It seems hard and a long process to make something like this, which is impressive that they achieved it and made it look superb.

My Production Company

My Production Company

The first thing I thought of for my production company was the name, I liked 'Trouille Productions' because trouille means spooky in French.

After watching other student production companies I found that most of them are simplistic so I decided to do something simple, which is when I thought of an eye opening.

I used Final Cut Pro to edit my production company, so I was able to change the speed and colour of what I had originally filmed. I wanted to edit the iris to make it red but because I don't know how to edit pictures very well, I wasn't able to do that. Instead I just added a filter to the video to make it darker and more dramatic.

I wanted to use a sound because without sound it would be quite boring, and I also wanted it to match the horror genre. I searched for sounds on Final Cut Pro and tried out multiple sounds such as a gunshot, buzzing bees, a lion roar and a creepy musical one. I also searched for 'horror music' but there wasn't any on there so in the end I used a dinosaur scream. I like how it is contrapuntal to what is actually happening in the video and that it is very short and sudden. I would prefer it to be a human scream so to make it better I would find an un-copyrighted scream and use that, or record my own scream.

I used the blade tool to cut out a section of the video so that I could change it to decrease the speed. I did this to make it more dramatic because before I had edited it, it was quite quick and didn't seem dramatic at all.

I think my production company is quite good, I really like the text I chose and I think the eye opening is quite dramatic so it conforms to the horror genre. The only thing I don't really like is the sound because it sounds quite amateur, but that could easily be changed.

My production company sequence

My production company sequence is called 'Trigpoint Productions'. I got the photo at the top of the mountain in Northern Ireland called Slieve Donard. I took a lot of photos and videos of the landscape on the way up and back down, but I thought the peak had the best view of an eerie expanse of the sea which would be the most effective. 'Trigpoint' is what is at the top of any mountain to mark the peak, so I thought that would be a good name.

Editing
Using Final Cut Pro, I added a filter to the picture to make it look darker, put the production company title in the centre, and got a sound effect of sea waves from youtube and made it into an audio track so I could crop it into the right amount of time.

Using an effect of 'fade to colour' I was able to make the intro fade from black into the picture, and at the end fade to black again while the sound slowly faded out.

The sound were free noises from YouTube of waves that are crashing against rocks. I used this as it seems like they're crashing against the mountain I took the picture on.

Advantages:
  • it was a simple clip to make
  • editing was fast
  • it was easy to figure out how to edit the photo and include the sound effect, fade in / out, and the title
Disadvantages:
  • there could have been more effort put into the photo, for example photoshopping something like lightning or rain
  • the title could have had a better font or one that stood out more to show the genre of our film more
  • the sound could have been eerier, for example using thunder and rain would've been more effective

My production company sequence

Farley Productions:
Inspiration:

My inspiration for my own production company logo, i thought Jerry Bruckheimer was effective with the use of lightning as I wanted to portray my production company as a horror based production company. The use of lighting creating an eerie dark atmosphere.

I re-created this version of the lightning on Sony Vegas pro 11, using a picture of a house from the country side. In order to create a dark look, I edited the picture and made it look dark using colour brightness and contrast as well as the curve colouring and made it look as if the picture was taken at night, making the clouds more defined, before editing the video.

I then continued to go onto Sony Vegas Pro 11 and edited the film. This was how I created the lightning effect:

Afterwards, I wanted a 3D effect to make it look disorientated and more spooky, on Sony Vegas I used the VFX of 'Stereoscopic 3D adjust' to create the effect. For the title to come up I wanted to make the screenshot of the picture smaller and the text to come up underneath, much like the Jerry Bruckheimer logo. to finish off I added a cloud effect over the top, as if it's mist to make the image look more spooky. However, I planned on making the mist go small like the screenshot of the house, towards the end but thought the mist staying the same size was effective.

My final copy:

Evaluation:
Overall I think my own production company sequence came out well as I feel I portrayed the genre of the company well through the logo and like the effect of the 3D. However, If I were to do it again I would change the typography used on the title of the production company as it didn't fit with the rest of the piece and was out of place.
