Adding the production companies

I used a Youtube to MP4 download website to download the Blumhouse Productions logo video. Now that I have saved it, we can now put it into the beginning of our opening scene along with one of the production companies that we made ourselves.

We chose Blumhouse Productions because it is well knwon for producing horror films and we thought it would be best to use a conventional production company rather than one like Universal which is much more general and is more commonly used for higher grossing films.

For our own production companies, we decided as a group that Kelsey's is the best and most appropriate out of all of ours. So I also downloaded that as an MP4 file so that we could put it in after the Blumhouse logo.

I think that both of our choices for production companies are good and conform to the genre of horror and so match the genre of our opening scene.

Professional Production Company

The Production Company; Warner Bros.

This is the opening logo for Warner brothers, a TimeWarner Company. It begins with the pieces of the logo all swirling until it forms in the sky. Depending on the film, the logo will change. For instance; in ‘Man of Steel’ the logo is grey and has Kryptonian symbols to fit in with the film. This is the same with Harry Potter as the logo is grey and the sky is dark and the clouds black. The logo goes through changes to fit with each film, so there is not a light hearted logo opening to a dramatic film. 

Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. is an American entertainment company that produces film, television and music entertainment. As one of the major film studios, it is a division of Time Warner, with its headquarters in Burbank, California. The company was founded by four brothers, Harry, Albert, Samuel, and Jack Warner, who were the sons of Benjamin Eichelbaum, an immigrant Polish cobbler and peddler. The brothers began their careers showing moving pictures in Ohio and Pennsylvania on a traveling basis.

They mainly targeted the genre of drama, as during the time it was during World War II, and those times were dramatic, and called for drama period films.

They are worth about 2.9 billion dollars.

My production company sequence

Inspiration:

My inspiration for my own production company logo, i thought Jerry Bruckheimer was effective with the use of lightning as I wanted to portray my production company as a horror based production company. The use of lighting creating an eerie dark atmosphere.

I re-created this version of the lightning on Sony Vegas pro 11, using a picture of a house from the country side. In order to create a dark look, I edited the picture and made it look dark using colour brightness and contrast as well as the curve colouring and made it look as if the picture was taken at night, making the clouds more defined, before editing the video.

I then continued to go onto Sony Vegas Pro 11 and edited the film. This was how I created the lightning effect:

Afterwards, I wanted a 3D effect to make it look disorientated and more spooky, on Sony Vegas I used the VFX of 'Stereoscopic 3D adjust' to create the effect. For the title to come up I wanted to make the screenshot of the picture smaller and the text to come up underneath, much like the Jerry Bruckheimer logo. to finish off I added a cloud effect over the top, as if it's mist to make the image look more spooky. However, I planned on making the mist go small like the screenshot of the house, towards the end but thought the mist staying the same size was effective.

Overall I think my own production company sequence came out well as I feel I portrayed the genre of the company well through the logo and like the effect of the 3D. However, If I were to do it again I would change the typography used on the title of the production company as it didn't fit with the rest of the piece and was out of place. 

Production company deconstruction

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is an American production company that was founded on April 17^th 1924 by Marcus Loew, an entertainment entrepreneur that gained control of Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Pictures.

Famous films include the 007 James Bond films since 1981, The Hobbit trilogy and 21 & 22 Jump Street. It is also famous for many of the earlier episodes of Tom and Jerry.

The intro starts off in the lion’s eye and zooms out to reveal a shiny gold banner – that looks like a film reel – with the lion’s head in the middle of a circle in the centre, roaring. There are Latin words in the circle that mean ‘art for art’s sake’. There is no sound apart from the lion roaring. The typography for the production title is thin, gold, serif writing that makes it look classy and professional.

It would be quite easy to make something like this – a simple banner with writing above, on and around it, however we would not be able to get any animals like that to be in it.

School-made production company

There is a picture of an eerie forest with the moon very bright in the upper middle of the screen with non-diegetic sinister music that consisted of strings plays in the background. The background is black and has white serif writing that says ‘Sylvanus Productions’ and fades in and out.

This is a good school production company logo that would be easy to replicate. It conveys the genre of the film well yet is still only seven seconds long, and very simple.

Advantages

• easy to replicate
• sound is simple and easily found or made
• it conveys the film genre well

Disadvantages

• it doesn't have any special effects
• the font didn't seem right for the company - it looked like nice handwriting rather than crooked writing or a serif font

Production company Deconstruction

Paramount Pictures

Paramount Pictures was founded on 8th May 1912 by Jessie L. Lasky, William Wadsworth Hodkison, Adolph Zukor and is a US based film production company and is considered to be part of the top eight Hollywood film studios (others being 20th Century Fox, Walt disney,Paramount Pictures, Sony, Warner Brothers/New line Cinema, Universal Studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Marvel Studios) The Film production doesn't follow a particular style of genre and does a number of different films.

A few of it's famous, more popular films are: Star Trek, The Godfather, mission impossible, Forest Gump, Beverly hill cops, Transformers

The production company logo sequence (the 100th anniversary logo created for 2012) is a 21 second long animation piece. It has non-diegetic dramatic orchestral strings in the background as the camera follows stars that settle above the mountain. The title 'Paramount' zooming onto the screen afterwards. 

If I wanted to re-create this idea for a production company logo it would be difficult as we don't have the required CGI equipment and special effects to create this,however could be constructed through the use of a real life mountain, instead of an animated one.

Student made production company logo

This production opening sequence is short (only 9 seconds long) and makes use of minimal editing  and simple text. The filming done is of a bird flying in the sky and is edited so the screen spotlights the bird, before screencapping the image of the bird flying in a still image. In the background soft twinkly piano music is being played non-diegetically as well as the sound of birds squawking. The birds squawking parallels the image shown as well as being an easy sound clip to find and record for ourselves. the text used is simple white with no added effects. It transitions onto the screen by popping up and forming into the natural text shape. However despite how easy this would be to create I felt they could have made it more advanced with their editing by adding effects and more creative transition as it looks amateur.

Production Company Deconstruction

Universal is an American film studio that was founded on April 30^th 1912 by  a German man called Carl Laemmle, many other people were also involved but he was the main person. When it was first created it was called Universal Film Manufacturing Company.

In the production company logo, dramatic music with drums plays non-diegetically while the camera zooms out, revealing the Earth with lights dotted around the countries and ‘Universal’ comes from behind the Earth to the front and stops in the middle of the shot. 

A logo like this would be very hard to make without the equipment needed for CGI, however it could be possible using mini models of the Earth, which is what Universal used for their logo in the past.

Student Production Company Logo

This logo is very short and simple, it is a black and white drawing of a skyline with added in effects to make it better. While the skyline is being 'drawn' there is the sound of a pencil drawing it while it is also flickering. The only text is the name of the production company which is written in white capital letters and says 'Capital Cinema'.

I think that this production company logo could have been made on Photoshop or another drawing and editing software, so it would be quite easy to make if you already know about how to do it. I don't know very much about how to use Photoshop so I would find it difficult to do something like this. 

 

I really like the simplicity of it because it is only three seconds long and there isn't much happening in it but it is still very detailed and interesting to watch, it also looks very professional.
