Heart in a Jar

Heart in a Jar

Our genre is slasher/horror so in our opening scene we need to explicitly show the genre through mise-en-scene. In our opening we will have a killers 'lair', so I thought that having a heart in a jar would show the genre quite explicitly.

I bought a sheep heart from the butchers and put it in some pickling vinegar. The heart is quite small but the jar makes it look bigger which is good. In the pictures the heart is clearly visible in the clear liquid, but now, after a few days of it being in the jar, the vinegar has turned a yellow/brown colour and it looks much more gruesome than before which means it will look even more disgusting by the time we film our scene.

Having body parts in the 'killer's lair' will definitely conform to the conventions of slasher films as it is an explicit prop that will immediately inform the audience of the genre, which is the aim.
