Costumes of Horror

Costumes play a huge role in any film, but especially horror. The costumes of a character define them, they show who they are. There is even an academy award for best costume design. To make a good film, the first thing you need is a good costume for the character, and to respect the actor / actress in what they wear and respect the source material. For instance, a good costume design would be Ben Affleck's Batman costume, and bad costume would be Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn for the way it deminers women and the character.

A great costume for horrror was Ridley Scott's Alien, where it is haunting in size and figure, and remains as practical effects on the alien itself, without the use of CGI. This is a sci-fi horror though, and there are many types of horror, including supernatural and for that the best costume would be the main demon in Insidious Chapter I with its creepy figure and bent legs like a stag and its sinister "Darth Maul" face and appearence. This costume is scary to the audience, just as Alien was, except Alien had people cry and puke in the cinema due to it being the first of its kind, whereas Insidious' monster and supernatural demon is something we are used to, but that does not mean we do not get goosebumps when we see it on screen. For the other horror genre, slasher, we see many examples, such as Hallowee, which is just a cheap William Shatner mask painted white, as well as in the horror film Friday the 13th with its simple hockey mask that has become iconic, and one of the most iconic, Leather Face, who wears a real man's skin as a mask and a bloody apron, and the film 'Scream' in which the killer uses a typical halloween horror mask but is widely known for its appearance in the five movies with its cloak and ghostly figure. Costumes in horror no matter what sub-genre, are very important, more so than films other than comic book films, this is because the audience is supposed to be scared not just by the story of the film, but the appearence of the killer himself, so his look is very important to create a character that the audience would not like to see looking through their window at midnight with a knife in hand.
