Deconstruction of opening scene: Scream 4 (2011)

In the background of the conversation that is happening, there is very quiet, slow, eerie music. This is parallel to the scene because what they're talking about is sinister, however may also be seen as contrapuntal because it is being played in a normal, relaxed conversational state. The music gets more intense and is parallel to the scene because the phone rings and there is a scary voice on the other end, saying violent and sinister things. This quickly builds tension as to what will happen next and make the audience feel slightly scared already, conforming to the genre.

Mise-en-scene

At the beginning, one of the girls picks up a kitchen knife and twists it in her hands while talking about watching a horror film. This immediately implies what will happen to one or both of the girls - that they will be stabbed and violently killed, conforming to the slasher horror genre.

Camera angles

The camera angles are mainly medium-shots and over-the-shoulder shots of the two women as they speak to each other. When one girl opens the door, there is a long shot of her walking outside the house and looking around, which adds to the suspense as there's always the expected jump-scare.

Editing

Quick shot-reverse-shot is used during the conversation which speeds up the pace so makes us fear the coming events. There is match on action used where the girl opens the front door, which heightens the suspense and anticipation because we as the audience are expecting there to be someone stood there who will murder the two girls.

Typography
The writing is white which is usually a pure symbol, but the 4 is red so reflects blood and gore - also shown in how it stands out against the white letters. The title of a horror film would usually be thin, serif writing, however the title spelt 'SCRE4M' is in large block letters. This subverts the horror genre, showing that there is possibly something different in this film and it sets the audience up for a new and unexpected story.
